An Autobiographical Imposture by Camille Daloz
It all started in the fall of 2019. I received a notification from the Leboncoin app informing me that Stefany had just answered "yes" to my question: "Is your standing table in good condition?" I followed up by asking if the table was sturdy enough for someone to stand on. Without hesitation, Stefany told me she would confirm very soon by trying it herself. And that’s how my incredible adventure began: a photo of a stranger standing on an IKEA table.
I call it an adventure because that first photo of Stefany propelled me into a world I had never known before. A parallel universe where I would regularly take refuge, frantically, developing a double, triple, even quadruple life through identities endlessly adapted to my whims and moments of wandering. Sometimes I was a man, sometimes a woman, single, divorced, retired, vulgar, deadpan… I immersed myself in these personas as a fake buyer to deceive real sellers. In the end, I realized that this pointless pastime was actually helping me break out of my own loneliness.
Today, it is through this imposture that I have chosen to talk about myself.
